Midwifery Degree Apprenticeship

Midwifery Apprenticeship

The midwifery curriculum at the University of Northampton offers a collaborative, inclusive and innovative approach to educate the registered midwives of the future. Apprentices will engage with scaffolded learning with the service user experience central to the course, adding value to apprentice learning. Research and evidence is central in exploring contemporary issues and critical discussion. Practice-based learning is also a core tenet within the course to support the development of effective communication strategies and promote leadership values, enabling competence in traditional and emerging communities of practice, culminating in reflective Midwifery registrants’ practitioners at the point of registration with the Nursing and Midwifery council (NMC).

On completion of the RMDA course, apprentices will be able to register with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) as a Registered Nurse within their chosen field of practice.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy for the RMDA course offers apprentices the opportunity to review, reflect and consider their personal learning and professional development within a professional context demonstrating a commitment to life learning, transformational practice and leadership.

Our assessment strategy deepens the apprentices founding conceptual knowledge and understanding of midwifery and its application in contemporary and emerging areas of practice through the critical evaluation of evidence to advance their practice and their profession. Apprentices studying at the UoN campus in Northampton will also receive an additional 2 hours of assessment coaching per 20 credit modules, in line with our Integrated Learner Support model

Summative assessments are explicitly designed to develop the core requirements of future midwives including practical application, enhanced clinical reasoning with evidence-based practice, communication and team working ability, critical problem solving, leadership and utilising digital medium. Assessment types include practical viva’s (OSCE), assessment in clinical placements, critical reflections, essay’s, presentations and vivas.

An End Point Assessment is integrated into the course and will take place on successful completion of the degree apprenticeship.
