Acting for Stage and Screen BA Welcome Pack

Welcome to Acting for Stage and Screen BA 2025.

The Acting for Stage and Screen BA delivers a highly practical and contemporary actor training programme that will help you develop as individual artists with skills in acting, movement, voice and devising for stage and screen. Over the next three years you will participate in a rigorous and playful actor training programme. This will enable you to be part of the next generation of actor-creators who are at the cutting edge of contemporary performance practices and the professional industry, making work that responds to the world around us and that stands out in an ever-shifting performance industry.
I hope you really enjoy the next three years here in Northampton, a town with a rich history of creative rebellion. You have an opportunity to make life-long friends alongside developing a network of Creative Industry peers.
In your first year you will work on the foundations of improvisation, movement and voice skills, followed by acting projects as an ensemble and for screen, culminating in an end of year stage show. We encourage you to just dive in and take advantage of the opportunities to develop as an actor and creator with us.

If you ever have any problems or concerns, then please make your first port of call your Personal Tutor, who you will meet in your first week and who will always be happy to help.

We can’t wait to start training with you.

  • Welcome week is the week commencing 22 September 2025. We will engage in a week of Induction and Welcome activities with you. It is important that you attend this week as you will learn more about your course, the facilities, accommodation and support services available to you.

In this week, we will introduce you to your fellow AFSS students, and start to build our creative ensemble. Please bring with you lose comfortable clothing, a laptop and charger, a notebook and pen, and all your creativity.

The first formal learning and teaching week is 29 September 2025 where you will begin your timetabled classes.

Your course leader will be in touch with you before the start of the academic year so please keep an eye on your emails from the end of August.

Preparation/ Equipment/ Reading Lists

As part of your training, you will be doing movement and physical activity. For this, you will need to wear loose black, unbranded clothing that you can comfortably move in. It is also recommended that you bring with you a towel, a water bottle, and anything you need to support any medical conditions eg. inhalers if you are asthmatic. We will work barefoot in studios, but if you cannot work barefoot for a medical reason, please contact your course leader, Rory. You will also need a notebook and pen or pencil as you will be expected to take regular notes on your practical work as part of your professional practice. You should also have available a laptop and charger for work on texts, writing, and for research purposes. Your lecturers will email you before the start of the semester with any required reading you will need to do before your course starts.

Enhancing skills, building networks and engaging in the wider University community

Acting for Stage and Screen offers live client brief projects, occasional work experience opportunities, guest speakers, and theatre trips. We also run a Turing funded scheme that supports students to experience living and training as an actor abroad. More details about these opportunities will be available to you when you join us on campus.
