Multimedia Journalism BA Welcome Pack
Welcome to Multimedia Journalism BA 2025.
Welcome to BA Multimedia Journalism!
You are in the starting blocks of your university career, so first, we are going to settle you all in and make sure that you are clear about your timetable and what you have to do! We are going to spend time getting to know you – as you will spend time getting to know both us and your classmates.
And we’re going to get stuck in right away. You’re going to be learning what journalism is all about, how to find news stories, how to interview people and how to write stories. You will be learning how to do that for online, for radio and for television. You’ll also be learning about the law, the ethics and the important structures of power we report on.
You will be doing three modules each semester. Typically, you can expect to have classes three days a week, but you will need to spend a further two days a week preparing, studying and practising your skills.
We have a programme of events to settle you in. See below for details!

Preparation/ Reading Lists
Watch, listen and read the news before you join us. It will give you a sense of what you are aiming at. Focus on respected mainstream outlets such as the BBC, Sky News, national newspapers and magazines as well as local and national radio. The one textbook you will all benefit from buying is McNae’s Essential Law for Journalists, 27th edition, by Harrison & Phillips. This will be an invaluable reference book for your time at university – and afterwards in work!
Enhancing skills, building networks and engaging in the wider University community
We will be buddying you up with Yr 2 and Yr 3 students to help you settle in. You will be able to volunteer on our community radio station NLive Radio to start building your experience as a newsreader, producer, presenter or reporter.
