Nursing Associate FdSc Welcome Pack

Welcome to FdSc Nursing Associate 2025.

We are delighted to welcome you to the University of Northampton and to the Foundation Degree Nursing Associate (FdSc Nursing Associate). We hope that you enjoy your time with us and gain knowledge and skills which will be valuable to you in the future in your new roles.

Foundation Degrees are vocational qualifications intended to allow students to combine practical skills and experiences with rigorous and broad based academic learning.  This FdSc has been developed to ensure you are able to meet the NMC Proficiencies for Nursing Associates (2018).  It has also been mapped to meet the Nursing Associate NMC 2018 (2019) apprenticeship standard for learners on the apprenticeship route.  This means, if you are an apprentice learner, that when you finish the programme you will have developed the knowledge, skills and behaviours to complete your apprenticeship and enable you to competently practice as a Nursing Associate and register with the NMC.

All the modules are delivered by experienced teaching staff and there is a close link between the theoretical and practical learning. Learning is supported by innovative and interactive computer-based resources which enhance and support the teaching and encourage development of independent and self-directed learning.

The course team, your personal tutors (PTs), academic assessors and dedicated Nursing Support are here to help and guide you with your studies and will be able to answer any questions you may have so please don’t be afraid to ask.

We wish you every success for the next two years and beyond in your future careers.

Equipment and resources

We don’t have any recommended text books that you should get. A good anatomy and physiology text book may be useful, but there are a number of e-books available through the library once you start. There is no expectation that you should do any reading before the programme starts.

Through the programme you will be going on clinical placement.  You will be provided with a uniform and a clinical skills bag, but you will need a sensible pair of black, flat shoes.  Trainers are not advised.
