Sport Coaching BSc Welcome Pack

Welcome to Sport Coaching BSc 2025.

Welcome to the University of Northampton!

The BSc (Hons) Sport Coaching degree is designed to develop your key coaching skills, theory and practical applications when working with athletes, teams and within performance coaching systems.

The course will develop skills such as developing athletes, performance analysis, team/athlete needs analysis, coaching approaches and pedagogies. For sports coaches to take a holistic approach to their athletes’ development we need to have an understanding the physiological, technical, psychological, and social factors that feed into the long-term athlete development.

As well as developing performance analysis skills and putting all our practical coaching skills into the real world, through our local clubs and organisations.

Equipment

You are not required to purchase any mandatory kit or textbooks to start this course. As a heavily practical based course students will require sportwear for many modules. We will provide all students with one of our course branded t-shirts, and students can purchase further course branded kit from Kit Locker. While purchasing this is not mandatory, we do encourage students to consider an additional pair of tracksuit bottoms / leggings for circumstances when completing work based learning activities and representing both our course and institution.

Additionally, at the start of term you will be given a choice of certain offers (i.e. free laptop, £500 off accommodation etc.) we would highly recommend and advise you to pick the laptop offer because you will be required throughout the 3 years of your degree to use different software.

Enhancing skills, building networks and engaging in the wider University community

In your second year you will complete a work placement module that includes completion of 120 hours of a coaching placement. It is advised to start making connections and networking in preparation for this during your first year. But do not worry, we have plenty of opportunities through our partners (Northampton Saints, Northampton Town FC and many more). These can be found on your course NILE page so please look our for announcements and opportunities for placements, volunteering and paid roles.
